WASHINGTON - It's the talker of the day: Should some schools in the metro area have closed on Wednesday due to weather? Some agree with the decision of some to cancel classes and others say some school districts overreacted.
WEDNESDAY WEATHER
FOX 5 tracked the winter weather overnight and as it moved into the area during the early morning hours. Light sleet and freezing rain began in the D.C. metro region around 3:30 a.m. and continued to about 6 a.m. In the D.C. metro area, patchy spots of ice formed on untreated areas, like sidewalks and side streets, but most major roadways had been pre-treated and were free of ice. To the north and west, heavier sleet and freezing rain caused worse icing conditions and will continue much longer into the day. Precipitation stopped briefly in the D.C. metro region in the morning and is expected to return as mostly rain around 11 a.m. Rain will continue into the afternoon.
DELAY OR CLOSE?
"In my personal opinion - it's a little bit out of control in this area," said Holly Morris. While she thinks the delays were warranted - she says the closings were not necessary. Holly says closings create hardships on working parents. "We have winter weather every year - at some point we need to learn how to deal with it!" One idea from Holly - have off during winter months and attend school during the summer!
Allison Seymour says it does seem like there are more closings now than in the past, but since becoming a parent, she completely understands. She says she trusts the school system and their judgement calls and says she would rather be safe than sorry.
Maureen Umeh says she thinks school closings are becoming excessive. "This is not the worst weather we've experienced in this region," she said. "I think it's a bit too much."

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Here are some tweets from viewers on the topic:
LeCount Briscoe writes, "Rain or Snow some commuters in DC, MD, & Northern VA drive like Idiots & therefore it's a Public Safety Risk to the School Children & Pedestrians!!!"
Mark Richards tweets, "In Carroll County, MD most main roads have been treated, secondary roads still icy. Parking lots at shopping centers, schools and sidewalks are EXTREMELY icy. Good call to close schools, it's virtually impossible to stand on untreated surfaces."
