When will the snow start in D.C.?

Computer weather model guidance does differ on the timing of exactly when the snow will start to fall in the D.C. region, but the FOX 5 DC weather team is leaning towards a start on Sunday night, possibly sometime after 6:00 p.m.

Snowfall is expected to be heaviest during the overnight and early morning hours of Monday.

Expected snowfall at 4 a.m.

As the snow arrives Sunday night into Monday, travel will certainly be impacted.

According to the Euro Model, snow will have already accumulated overnight and by 4 a.m. on Monday some heavier bands will have set up along the I-81 corridor. Consistent snowfall is expected to continue through the morning.

Expected snowfall at 7 a.m.

By the 7 a.m. hour, heavier bands will shift further south across Lower Southern Maryland.

According to FOX 5's Gwen Tolbart, from the period of 4 a.m. -10 a.m. snowfall will continue to accumulate with very cold conditions. At this time, no mix is forecast during this time period along the I-95 corridor or the Beltway, but there will be some west of I-81.

Temperatures will be in the low to mid 20's. Winds will be light from the western region at 5-10 mph, so it will not be blustery.

DC snow storm forecast: 5 to 10 inches of snow across DC, Maryland & Virginia

The Washington, D.C. region continues to brace for the first winter storm of 2025 with a significant snow threat from Sunday night into Monday.

Temperatures will stay in the 30s through Thursday of next week.

Expected snowfall at 6 p.m.

Our second round of snowfall is expected to move through during the evening commute Monday.

This will be the burst of snow that could put many parts of the DMV up to about 10" of snow as it packs onto what made it to the ground during the early morning hours.

Once the storm system moves out, conditions will remain cold but clear.

Winter storm warning issued for DMV

A winter storm warning has been issued for D.C., central Maryland, and Northern Virginia by the National Weather Service. The warning will remain in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday evening to 1 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to officials.

What to expect with travel

As the snowfall arrives Sunday night into Monday, travel will certainly be impacted. Any untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses will become slick and dangerous for travel.

Tolbart warns, if you do not have to venture out, then plan to just stay inside once the snow arrives.

Some areas could see a wintry mix, including sleet, ice or freezing rain. Pedestrians will also have to walk with caution.

If you have plans to catch a flight, there is a very good chance of flight cancelations or delays due to the inclement weather. Call ahead and plan accordingly.

The models are still showing significant winter weather. Snow bursts, any shift in the storm's track, and the amount of mix in any given area will affect snow totals.
