WASHINGTON - There is a new adorable arrival at the National Zoo. For the first time in 32 years, a sea lion pup was born at the Washington D.C. zoo.
The pup's 11-year-old mother named Calli gave birth to the little one on Sunday. The sex of the newborn is unknown as zoo staff is allowing Calli to care for the pup without any interference while also giving them time to bond.
The zoo said this is the second pup Calli has given birth to.
"Both will remain off-exhibit until Calli's behavior indicates that she is ready to introduce the pup to the other members of the colony," said the National Zoo in a news release.
The National Zoo has three other adult sea lions in their care - the pup's 8-year-old father, Jetty, and two unrelated females sea lions named Summer and Sidney.
