Virginia school districts introduce new smartwatch ban and restrictions

A new policy is going into effect, banning smartwatches in some school districts.

At least one school district in northern Virginia is officially banning students from using smartwatches. While other school districts across the Commonwealth scramble to have policies in place to adhere to Governor Glenn Youngkin’s executive order promoting cellphone-free learning.

School districts in Northern Virginia are tackling the growing issue of classroom distractions, particularly those caused by cell phones. Loudoun County introduced a new, stringent policy on the usage of cell phones and other electronics.

The deadline for the cellphone use policy was January 1, 2025. As most students return to school on Monday, they will be greeted with new policies.

Alexandria City Public Schools is now banning smartwatches and not everyone agrees with the move. The ban goes into effect upon students’ return to school from winter break.

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin is cracking down on cell phones in schools.

The tightened restrictions on smartphones have apparently spilled over into smartwatches.

In a statement emailed to FOX 5, ACPS highlights that while smartwatches were initially permitted, they are now prohibited in all schools.

We’re told consequences could include suspension and even expulsion.

Fairfax County Public Schools encourages families to contact the front office if there's a family emergency versus contacting a student directly, according to their website. FCPS requires students to keep their cell phones away and silenced throughout the school day and instructional periods. Although there are a few stipulations that vary based on the grade level of the student.

FCPS's full cell phone policy can be viewed on their site. Their smartwatch policy remains consistent across grade levels.

"Smartwatches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited."

In Prince William County, smartwatches are allowed during the day, but for K-8, the cellular feature must be turned off during the day and for high schoolers, that feature must be turned off during instructional time.
