The Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection has issued a warning about fraudulent donation schemes, including fake websites, phishing emails, social media posts, and phone calls. The rise of artificial intelligence has made these scams increasingly difficult to identify, officials said.
"When disasters like this happen, scammers are on the prowl," said Brittany Freeman, marketing and public relations manager for the Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection. "We’ve seen this time and time again—scammers creating new ways to reach out to people during times of crisis."
To avoid falling victim, officials advise donors to carefully scrutinize how organizations are requesting contributions. They recommend avoiding cash, credit card, or cryptocurrency donations, keeping receipts for records, and reporting any suspected fraud to authorities.

"Anybody can be susceptible to these scams," Freeman added. "The best thing you can do is pause, research, and, if you’re unsure, reach out to our office for help verifying the legitimacy of an organization."
