Proposed bill would ban tackle football for young athletes in Maryland
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - A Maryland lawmaker wants to ban tackle football for young athletes.
Delegate Terri Hill of Howard County will propose the controversial bill to the statehouse on Friday. The proposal calls for banning tackling for athletes under the age of 14 years old.
Hill says they are the most vulnerable to long-term damage. Athletes over the age of 14 years old will be required to complete a class that spells out the risks from concussions and brain injuries.
The proposed bill would also apply to heading in soccer and checking in hockey and lacrosse. Delegate Hill told FOX 5 that she is already receiving hate mail that is accusing her of ruining athletic opportunities for young people.
