Prince George’s County police investigating death of 8-year-old after ATV crash
TEMPLE HILLS, Md. - Prince George’s County police are investigating after an 8-year-old succumbed to injuries he suffered in an ATV crash in Temple Hills over the weekend.
Kemel Bonilla-Reyes died on Tuesday, two days after an ATV he was riding on rolled over in a cul-de-sac on Janis Lane, police say.
According to investigators, the child was riding on the gas tank and holding onto the handlebars while a 15-year-old operated the ATV.
Bonilla-Reyes was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
Police say they were not notified when the initial incident occurred.
An autopsy is pending.
Police recovered the ATV, and they are investigating the incident.
“This is a tragic situation. We are going to get to the bottom of what happened and how it happened. These off road vehicles are a danger to the community and, as I have stressed so often, off road vehicles being driven on county roadways are an extreme danger to those riding them, and it is illegal. As we conduct this investigation, we continue to urge all those who ride ATVs to please do so only in a safe and legal manner so we can prevent these types of heartbreaking outcomes in the future,” said Chief Hank Stawinski.
