Port City's seasonal beer returns as 3rd anniversary of derecho arrives

It was a storm that brought a lot of destruction and extensive power outages to the Mid-Atlantic region.

On June 29, 2012, a line of thunderstorms called a derecho impacted ten states and Washington D.C. as the intense weather left an estimated four million customers without power for up to a week in this region.

The historic weather event also left Alexandria-based Port City Brewing Company without power for five days. Without electricity, the brewery was unable to control the fermentation temperatures for one of its tanks of lager.

But this disaster ended up turning into a gift as this batch was hopped differently, fermented at a higher temperature and a new beer was born!

The Derecho Common is Port City's summer seasonal beer and they will be releasing it again this year as the third anniversary of the derecho arrives.

The beer will be released on June 26 in the brewery's tasting room and then the following week to the public.

Bill Butcher, the owner of Port City Brewing Company, stopped by Good Day DC to give a little history lesson on this tasty beer. (Watch the video above!)
