Pope Francis’ funeral will take place on Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square.

Plans for the funeral and burial of Pope Francis

The public viewing of Pope Francis will commence on Wednesday at St. Peter’s Basilica, following a procession transporting his casket from his residence.

Pope Francis will be laid to rest at St. Mary Major Basilica, located outside the Vatican and home to his beloved icon of the Virgin Mary.

As world leaders and the faithful mourned Francis’ passing, cardinals gathered at the Vatican to arrange his funeral and burial. They also addressed key decisions regarding the governance of the Catholic Church.

Eligible cardinals will convene in the Sistine Chapel to elect the next pope through the conclave, the traditional papal selection process.

 The winning candidate must secure at least two-thirds of the vote from cardinals under the age of 80, who are the only ones permitted to participate.
