RIVERDALE, Md. - Police say a 16-year-old male student from Parkdale High student was stabbed multiple times during an incident near the school grounds in Prince George's County.
The incident happened off school property, on the other side of a fence line on Good Luck Road and put the school on lockdown Tuesday afternoon.
According to reports, someone inside the school alerted authorities that they saw a large group of young men gathering in the woodline behind the school and saw someone stumbling in that area.
Chief Hank Stawinski with Prince George's County Police say they believe they were able to prevent the situation from escalating. He says he has been in touch school CEO Dr. Kevin Maxwell on the incident.
The lockdown was later lifted. Police say they have had issues with the wooded area outside the school before. It is not considered school grounds.
Investigators say the teen, who was taken to hospital for his injuries, is in police custody, along with several male suspects. Police say they have not been able to recover a weapon.
Police say they are looking into the matter and believe the suspects involved in this incident are gang-affiliated.
Parents are concerned and say they never received an alert from the school, but many instead heard from their children via text.
John White with Prince George's County Schools said the first priority on Tuesday was keeping students safe.
