WASHINGTON - A D.C. officer was shot while responding to a call in Southeast D.C. and the suspect in the shooting was killed when police returned fire, according to MPD Police Chief Pamela Smith.
Police say just before 5 p.m., officers were called to the 2800 block of Gainesville Street, Southeast after receiving a report that a person was walking around with a gun.
As they were investigating, shots were fired at the officers and one of them was hit. Officers returned fire at the suspect, who was struck multiple times. He was taken to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The police officer who was shot and another police officer injured in the incident were both taken to the hospital for treatment. According to the D.C. Police Union, the officer shot has a serious injury but is in stable condition.
The Washington branch of the ATF is on scene to help with the ongoing investigation.
No additional details have been released at this time.
