Police say they have safely located a teenage girl who was reported kidnapped from an apartment complex in Prince George's County Tuesday morning.

Officers say 16-year-old Erica Alvarez was taken against her will from the apartments along the 8100 block of 15th Avenue in Langley Park shortly before 8 a.m. Tuesday. Alvarez is from Washington, D.C. and was reported missing from Maryland Avenue in the District on May 22. She was found at 2:30 p.m. in Prince George's County, according to police.

Investigators say Alvarez was in the vestibule of the apartment building when a dark-colored SUV that witnesses say had been circling the neighborhood pulled up to the doors. At least one person, dressed in dark clothing and wearing a mask, got out of the vehicle, entered the vestibule and grabbed Alvarez.

Witnesses say the man forced Alvarez into the SUV before the driver of the vehicle sped away. Officials add that at around 6 a.m. Tuesday, officers received a call from a person at the apartment complex who said they were concerned for Alvarez who was acting distraught. Officer say that when they arrived, Alvarez was gone.

At this time, police have no indication that the incident is gang-related. Officers say they believe Alvarez knew someone at the apartment complex but do not know why she was there or how long she was there.

At a press conference held Tuesday afternoon, police say detectives are speaking with Alvarez and she is currently cooperating with authorities.

They are still working to determine what happened to her this morning, according to police.

PGPD PIO Jennifer Donelan says Alvarez was found thanks to friends and social media. Police were able to make contact with her, locate her and pick her up.

Police say they still want to speak with the driver of the SUV.
