Police investigate slaying of state prison inmate in Jessup
JESSUP, Md. - (AP) -- Maryland State Police say they're investigating the slaying of a state prison inmate at the maximum-security Jessup Correctional Institution.
The agency said in a statement Tuesday that investigators have identified a suspect in the beating death last month of 58-year-old Glenn Smith. Police say the name of the suspect, another inmate, won't be released until charges are placed by the Anne Arundel County State's Attorney's Office.
Police say Smith was last seen uninjured on Jan. 17, before cells were locked for the night. The next morning, his cellmate told a correctional officer Smith was injured.
Smith was taken to the University of Maryland Medical Center's shock trauma unit, where he died Jan. 21.
Police say an autopsy concluded the death was a homicide, resulting from multiple blunt force injuries.
