ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Authorities are investigating a reported sexual assault of a little girl at Fort Hunt Park in Fairfax County.
U.S. Park Police said they responded to the park off of the southern end of the George Washington Memorial Parkway at around 9:35 p.m. Wednesday.
According to officials, the suspect had fled the area before authorities were called. Police conducted a search of the area afterwards as a precaution. A large police presence along with search K-9s were seen as a portion of the park was temporarily shut down for the investigation.
Police interviewed witnesses and there was at least one man who appeared to be detained for questioning. It is unknown if any arrest was made.
"I was just riding bikes on my day off, it is a beautiful summer afternoon and saw some unusual police activity here, which is very uncommon," said Diana Maurer. "This is a very peaceful, friendly park, so I pulled off to find out what was going on. Somebody said that someone was grabbing someone and potentially causing problems with people here in the park."
A worker at the park told FOX 5 that the sexual assault suspect drove to the park in a car. A blue four-door vehicle was seen towed away from the park with a police escort.
According to police, the suspect and the victim may have known each other.
A woman who apparently witnessed the incident did not want to talk on camera with FOX 5, but she said she was very disturbed.
The incident remains under investigation.
