Police investigate after back-to-back night gunfire in Arlington neighborhood

Arlington County police are searching for suspects after gunfire erupted on the same residential block two nights in a row, striking a home, damaging multiple vehicles, and leaving one man injured.

What we know:

Patrol officers heard about 15 rounds from multiple guns when they responded to the 2400 block of South Lowell Street around 9:20 p.m. Thursday. When they arrived, police found several parked cars and a home riddled with bullet holes. No injuries were reported in Thursday night's incident, and crime scene technicians recovered evidence at the scene. Officers say they canvassed the area and deployed a drone and police K9, but were not able to locate the suspect.

Investigators are working to determine if the gunfire is connected to a shooting on the same block late Wednesday night. In that incident, a man standing outside was struck by gunfire around 11:48 p.m. before running to a nearby home for help. He was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and several parked vehicles were also damaged by bullets.

Suspects in Wednesday's shooting fled the scene, and police have not released suspect descriptions for either incident.

Police are now keeping extra eyes on the neighborhood by adding cameras on both ends of the block.

On Friday, officers returned to the scene and looked through a backpack in search of more evidence of gunfire.

What they're saying:

Despite many home security cameras in the neighborhood, none captured what happened. The incident left some neighbors upset.

"This is very, very traumatic and very shocking and just…I mean two nights in a row?  Come on now.  Two nights in a row?" said neighbor Martina Knight.

"It was like a pop pow pop, you know. It was loud. It was a gunshot. Anyone knows a gunshot when they hear one, but yeah, that was weird," said Arlington resident Tracey Rogers. "But then they said it was right here, right here, which I live here; that's too close to my door."

"We don't know what happened. How? Why? But it's just a safety concern for the children and everyone who stays in this area," Knight added.

Police said they will be increasing patrols of the neighborhood to prevent the incident from occurring again.

"Two nights in a row is a ‘wow’ factor because it's pretty quiet on our street," said Rogers. "We’ve got some seniors here, and we’ve got working people here and the little kids or whatever, but you know this is a ‘wow factor actually, because this is not the norm for this street."’

"Honestly, they need to have police sit right here on the corner area cause it's not… it's unacceptable. It's very much unacceptable," Knight said.

Authorities are asking residents with tips or video footage related to the shootings to contact Arlington County Police at 703-228-4180 or ACPDTipline@arlingtonva.us.
