Police ID woman mauled to death by a pit bull in DC

D.C. police have released the identity of a woman who was mauled to death by a dog in a Southeast home on Sunday.

Fifty-five-year-old Angela Smith of Southeast died after she was taken to a local hospital, suffering from severe injuries inflicted by the family pit bull.

D.C. police responded to the home on Dexter Terrace Southeast around 6:30 p.m. after the attack was reported.

They say Smith was unconscious and suffering from what police described as "multiple trauma wounds."

Neighbors say they often saw the woman walking the dog in the area. They say they never saw the dog be aggressive toward people, but say the dog had been aggressive towards other pets in the neighborhood.

The Humane Rescue Alliance says the dog was humanely euthanized on Sunday, after being removed from the home by Animal Control.
