BURTONSVILLE, Va. - A pizza delivery driver was shot to death in Montgomery County late Monday evening, according to authorities.
FOX 5's Paul Wagner reports the victim, identified by police as 45-year-old Francesco Michael Digiovanni, was a part-time driver for Domino's Pizza and was delivering food near Aldora Circle in Burtonsville when he was shot in his vehicle at about 11:15 p.m.
Officials said Digiovanni drove his Jeep down Ballinger Drive after being shot and his SUV came to a stop where he later died.
Witnesses told police they heard gunshots and a car speeding off. Two witnesses told FOX 5 that they heard two shots.
The owner of the Domino's Pizza where Digiovanni worked said the deliveryman had just made a drop-off to a repeat customer.
"Store personnel got nervous when he didn't return and they started to notify their supervisors that we had a driver who hadn't come back from a run yet and then the police came into the store and let us know there had been an incident," owner Ed Treacy said.
Digiovanni's wife told FOX 5 he worked two jobs, including at Uniform City on Veirs Mill Road in Rockville.
"It's tough to lose someone who you work with and who's a good person, a really good person who was a good team member," Treacy said. "Did a great job and was just trying to make some extra money for his family so it's senseless."
A motive remains unclear at this time, according to police. Anyone with information that could aid detectives in their investigation was urged to call (240) 773-5070.
