Pilot flown to trauma center after small plane crash in Md.

The pilot of a small plane was flown to a trauma center after his plane crashed in Prince George's County.

On Monday afternoon, crews responded to the scene near Potomac Airfield in Fort Washington. Authorities say the 63-year-old pilot, identified as Gary Kempen of Middleton, Rhode Island, experienced engine trouble and lost power to his blue and white Piper Aire single-engine plane after taking off from the air field. Kempen struck several trees while crash-landing his aircraft in a wooded area.

The pilot was flown to Prince George's Hospital Center for the injuries he sustained during the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the plane crash.
