Bamboo Bar opens as National Zoo introduces Bao Li and Qing Bao

What we know

As the National Zoo prepares to debut its newest residents, giant pandas Bao Li and Qing Bao, a popular Woodley Park gastropub is rolling out its own panda-inspired attraction.

Duke’s Counter will launch its panda-themed pop-up, The Bamboo Bar, on Friday, January 10, coinciding with the Zoo’s members-only preview of the pandas.

According to Washingtonian Magazine, the Bamboo Bar promises a whimsical, panda-themed experience with floor-to-ceiling forest backdrops, an abundance of bamboo decor, and a neon panda munching on a burger.

Visitors can sip on creatively crafted drinks, including a spicy "Bao-zy" hot chocolate with cayenne and Amaretto, a refreshing bamboo mule, and kid-friendly options. Drinks will be served in custom-made panda-themed glassware, adding a playful touch.

Daniel Kramer, managing partner at Duke’s Counter, told Washingtonian: "We knew that we wanted to have a big welcoming party and a full embrace of the pandas and everything they mean in the city.

Kramer added that he began planning the pop-up after the Zoo announced the pandas’ arrival in May.

Duke’s Counter will continue to serve its regular menu during the pop-up, which will run indefinitely during the restaurant's standard operating hours.

When does the Panda exhibit open at the DC Zoo?

On Friday, Zoo members will have an exclusive opportunity to meet Bao Li and Qing Bao at a special preview event, two weeks before the exhibit opens to the public.

Visitors can explore the refurbished panda habitat, take photos, leave messages on a Wish Wall, and learn about conservation efforts to protect pandas in the wild.

Timed reservations are required for the Zoo event, and each group is limited to one 30-minute visit. For non-members, the panda exhibit opens Friday, Jan. 24.
