Suspect shot by police in Suitland

Prince George's County Police Chief Malik Aziz gives an update on the officer-involved shooting in Suitland.

The chief clarified that it was a verbal exchange between the officer and the man that led to the gunfire. He was pronounced dead by officials at the scene.

Aziz also confirmed that a firearm was recovered at the location, and a second individual was in the unit when the officer arrived. In a press release Friday, the department said that two handguns were found near the man and that the deceased was also identified as a resident of the home. He was not the person, however, who made the 911 call.

The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General will be leading the investigation into the shooting.

Police are on scene in the 5100 block of Suitland Road where the incident was reported around 5:30 p.m. Thursday. It is a residential area. The department is expected to release the bodycam footage within the next 20 business days.
