Off-duty officer fatally shoots man near Brentwood Recreation Center in Northeast DC

WASHINGTON - A homicide investigation is underway after a man was killed in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday evening in Northeast D.C.

According to police, the shooting happened just before 7 p.m. in the 2300 block of 15th Street nearby the Brentwood Recreation Center. Several officers who heard the gunshots in the area found a man in his 20s suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said the officer was off-duty and was not in uniform at the time of the shooting. Investigators are trying to determine why he was in the area and what led to the shooting.

"It appears he used his department-issued service weapon," the police chief said.

Police have recovered a firearm from the man who was killed, according to Newsham.

"We will take a look at the evidence that we have at the scene -- shell casings that have been recovered, we will scour for video and of course we will talk to witnesses and try to piece all of that together."
