NEW MOM: DC Mayor Muriel Bowser adopts baby

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Monday she is now a mother after adopting a baby.

In a statement posted on her Twitter account, Bowser said she is taking some time off to spend with her new child:

"It is with great job and excitement that I share with you that late last year, I decided to begin the adoption journey. I was not sure how long it would take, and to my delight, it advanced much sooner than I expected. So today, I am proud to announce that I am a mom!

"As any new mother would feel - I am thrilled, nervous and looking forward to each and every stage. I will be taking the next week or so to enjoy these precious moments with my new baby. I am so grateful to be able to start my family in this wonderful way.

"Please keep us in your prayers, and I thank you in advance for allowing us this private time.

"I will of course remain in contact with my office. Because of the great team we have, I don't expect we'll miss a beat, and I know we'll all keep working hard to make DC proud."

A source has told FOX 5's Matt Ackland that the baby is a girl and her name is Miranda.

Bowser is seeking to become the first D.C. mayor elected to a second term since Anthony Williams in 2002.
