MEAN TWEETS: FOX 5's Kevin McCarthy takes hateful tweets intended for GOP leader in stride

Congressman Kevin McCarthy is the Majority Leader in the U.S. House of Representatives.

FOX 5's Kevin McCarthy is the resident movie reviewer and entertainment reporter extraordinaire at WTTG.

Sometimes, people online get the two confused.

For years, FOX 5's Kevin McCarthy has mistakenly received tweets meant for the House Majority Leader. He says the tweets increase if there is a big new story involving the congressman.

Our Kevin boils it down to the way the Twitter handles are spelled out. "It makes sense. On Twitter, I'm @KevinMcCarthyTV - on Twitter he's @GOPLeader." He thinks most people - intending to message Congressman McCarthy - start spelling out the name and don't realize the tweet is heading in the wrong direction.

Some of the tweets can be downright nasty, hateful - even disturbing. But our Kevin takes it in stride. "I usually take something from the tweet and turn it around and flip it around," he said. Usually, he offers a movie recommendation based on something the writer said.

Generally speaking, our Kevin says the writer apologies for their mistake. Generally. Sometimes, the tweets get deleted.

"I do it for two reasons. One, because I want to call them out. I think people hide behind their keyboards and say things to people they would never say to somebody's face and I think it's just interesting to call them out and put them on display and say look what you're doing," he said. "And…I also like being condescending and sending them a movie review back."
