Md. Gov. seeks federal disaster declaration for January blizzard

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Gov. Larry Hogan is requesting a federal disaster declaration to get aid after last month's record snowstorm.

Hogan made the request Friday for the storm that started Jan. 22.

An approved federal disaster declaration would bring federal assistance to communities in Maryland through state and local agencies and public safety partners that served them during the storm.

The governor's office says the state was severely impacted by the storm, which brought historic snowfall totals, high winds and freezing temperatures.

Russell Strickland, director of the Maryland Emergency Management Agency, says initial damage and cost estimates have validated the significant impact of the storm.
