Maryland state senators are expected to vote on a bill that would allow Prince George's County to install speed cameras along one of the D.C. region's deadliest roadways.

County leaders want to put a camera on southbound Indian Head Highway (Route 210) at Old Fort Road. On March 22, 24-year-old Samira Jenkins was struck by a vehicle while crossing the roadway on her way to a job interview. Investigators said Jenkins was in a crosswalk when she was struck.

According to AAA Mid-Atlantic, tere have been 61 traffic-related deaths on Indian Head Highway since 2007, including seven deadly traffic crashes in 2017.

Under the current law, speed cameras in Maryland can only be put up in work or school zones. There are exceptions in Montgomery County where speed cameras have been grandfathered in. The Prince George's County delegation is asking for an exception for this camera.

The Maryland House has already approved the bill.
