ARTESIA , Calif. (FOX 11/ CNS) - A driver in a speeding Jeep rear-ended a gas tanker on the westbound 91 Freeway in Artesia Saturday, triggering a three-vehicle crash that left him and two children inside his vehicle dead, according to authorities.
The crash just west of Pioneer Boulevard occurred at 1:03 a.m., the California Highway Patrol reported.
The victims were later identified as Lavell Mann, 33; Legend Mann, a 9- month-old boy; and Logan Mann, a 3-year-old girl, said Lt. Dave Smith of the Los Angeles County coroner's office.
The deceased were residents of Long Beach, according to the CHP.
Mann was speeding in a 2015 Jeep that rear-ended a 2010 Peterbuilt gas tanker, with the impact causing the Jeep to strike the concrete median wall, the CHP reported.
The Jeep then overturned in the carpool lane, where it came to a rest on its roof.
All three victims were pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles County fire officials, CHP Officer Stephan Brandt said.
A 2012 BMW with two occupants then struck the Jeep. The driver of the BMW, a 34-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries and her passenger, a 6-year-old girl, suffered major injuries. Paramedics transported the Torrance residents to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
The driver of the gas tanker, a 41-year-old man, was not injured.
