Man killed in morning rush hour shooting on Suitland Parkway

SUITLAND, Md. - A 23-year-old D.C. man was killed after shots were fired in the middle of rush hour traffic Tuesday morning in Prince George's County. The investigation into the shooting caused Suitland Parkway to be closed for several hours.

The incident reportedly began as a fight between two cars on Old Silver Hill Road. Following the altercation, one vehicle followed another onto Suitland Parkway, and that is when the gunfire broke out.

U.S. Park Police say they received a call about a man with a gun around 9:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Suitland Parkway.

"They were driving and they were shooting, and he was sitting in the passenger seat window and he was shooting a machine gun," said one woman.

At one point, a passenger exited a vehicle and was shot trying to run across Suitland Parkway.

"Preliminary investigation indicates the incident began off the parkway as an altercation between two vehicles. At one point, the male exited his vehicle and ran across the parkway where he was struck by gunfire," said Prince George's County Police Sgt. James Dingeldein.

Police arrived to find a 23-year-old Jerome Robinson, of Southeast D.C., shot and lying on the roadway. He was rushed to Prince George's Hospital Center where he died from his injuries.

"There was that car sitting in the median. Like they were sitting there and my co-worker said that he saw someone up over the car door like shooting out the car door," said a witness.

Several other cars caught up in the shooting were also hit and dozens of shell casings were seen all over the roadway. Luckily, no one else was hurt.

"When we stopped it was like a traffic jam. ... It was like sitting on 495 trying to come up into D.C. -- like just stopped -- parking lot," said another witness.

"I think it's terrible that human life is not important to people anymore it seems like, and they will kill you for anything."

Police do not have any suspect description at this time. However, investigators say they are searching for a white Audi vehicle involved in the shooting.

Investigators say they found a gun on the victim. Police do not believe any danger to the public persists after the incident.

Suitland Parkway reopened just before 5 p.m., officials say.
