Man dies after vehicle plunges into water at Arlington marina

The driver of a vehicle that went into the water at a marina in Arlington has died, D.C. police said.

The incident was reported at around 9 a.m. Friday at the Columbia Island Marina along the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

An Arlington County Fire Department water rescue team responded to the scene. Two divers smashed the car's windows in the search for the driver, but initially had trouble finding him.

"Once our third member went in, he was able to make contact with the victim in there," said Joe Temarantz of the Arlington County Fire Department. "At which time, the three of us were able to remove him from the vehicle through the driver's door. Then we removed him from the water and back onto the boat ramp."

The victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition before passing away, officials said.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle. The car has been pulled from the water.

D.C. police are now investigating.
