WASHINGTON - When you hit the road this November, make sure you’re on the lookout for deer.
In fact, one recent report suggests this coming deer season may be even more problematic for drivers than in years past.
Here’s why: Insurance claims for cars hitting animals typically increase each November, according to officials with the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI).
That makes sense as it’s mating season for deer, when the animals are most active. However, a recent HLDI report found that last November, the number of animal-strike-related insurance claims actually dropped.
"We did not expect to see a significant drop in 2022 in November, but we did see that," Senior Vice President for Communications Russ Rader said. "We don’t exactly know why."
Rader said it could be because a lot of people are still working from home or it could be variations in the data, but either way, the fear is that last year’s relatively tame deer season could lead to even more deer being out on the roads right now.
"Because we saw that drop last year in crashes, it could mean that there are a lot more deer out and about this year, and it could mean bad news for this November," Rader said.
As a result, his advice is pretty simple: drive slowly and buckle up.
