Leesburg police investigating alleged incident involving football players at Tuscarora High School
LEESBURG, Va. - A police investigation is underway regarding an alleged incident involving players on a Loudoun County high school football team.
According to a report, a high school football player at Tuscarora High School was sexually assaulted after practice, prompting the police investigation by Leesburg police.
Now, outrage is spreading on social media about how the school is handling the situation. Parents say they are just being notified even though the incident happened earlier this month and was reported to police last Friday.
Despite the allegation, Tuscarora's football game at Freedom High School this Friday will go on as scheduled amid the investigation and growing concerns.
Leesburg police say it is too early to classify what type of investigation it is. Police say they still have a number of people to interview, which they say could cause more delays.
Investigators say because the alleged incident happened inside a high school and everyone involved is a minor, they must have a parent present when being interviewed.
Police say the school is responsible for notifying parents about incidents that happen in the school, but investigators are asking for continued patience until the investigation concludes.
The school district said in a statement:
"Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) is cooperating with the Leesburg Police Department to investigate an alleged incident involving members of the Tuscarora High School football team.
"LCPS became aware of the alleged incident on Friday, October 5.
"To preserve the integrity of the investigation by Leesburg police - and due to federal laws protecting student privacy - LCPS is limited as to what it can share with the public.
"At this point in the investigation, Leesburg police have not determined what charges, if any, will be sought regarding this incident.
"The Leesburg Police Department continues to monitor this situation. The Leesburg Police Department is committed to providing more resources to Tuscarora should they be needed.
"Federal law prohibits LCPS from revealing disciplinary consequences involving students. School Board policy sets discipline consequences, including expulsion, for very serious infractions.
"The Leesburg Police Department contributed to the writing of this message."
FOX 5 is told a video was posted online showing the alleged assault. However, police could not confirm that.
The team's football practice was canceled earlier this week, but resumed on Tuesday.
