BALTIMORE - Julius the baby giraffe has shown slight improvement since receiving a transfusion on Sunday, but the Maryland Zoo said he's still not out of the woods yet.
Maryland Zoo officials say Julius received a critical plasma transfusion along with antibiotics and fluids, which revealed a slight improvement in his most recent blood work.
The baby giraffe's mother Kesi has been struggling to nurse him, which has posed a threat to his survival since he was born on June 15.
Veterinary teams have been working around-the-clock to bottle feed and care for Julius. Tests have indicated he is lacking essential antibodies to protect him from disease.
This was Julius's second transfusion, as he received the first transfusion just three days after he was born.
In an update, the zoo said:
"We won't sugar coat it, Julius and the Zoo team are in a very hard spot right now and there is still work to be done. Thank you for keeping Julius in your thoughts and hearts, #TeamJulius. Your support continues to amplify the passion and commitment of the team as they work through the night."
