WASHINGTON - A Washington, D.C., man received two life sentences for raping and sexually assaulting a woman at knifepoint aboard a moving Red Line train in 2016.
John P. Hicks, 41, was sentenced Friday after being convicted of first-degree rape and first-degree sex offense.
He was found guilty by a jury in January.
The victim told jurors she boarded the train after her overnight nursing job and awoke to find Hicks as the only other occupant of the train car.
Hicks engaged her in conversation but pulled out a knife and forced her to the back of the train, where he made her perform sex acts.
Prosecutors said Hicks' DNA was found on a tissue the victim - a nurse - used after the attack. Video was played during the trial showing what police said was the suspect and the victim exiting the train at the Glenmont Metro station.
Hicks apologized before his sentencing and said he hopes the victim can one day move on with her life.
