Inside tour: First lady decorates White House for Christmas

The Trump family is getting ready to celebrate their first Christmas in the White House, and first lady Melania Trump has already decked the halls.

This year's theme is "Time-Honored Traditions." The first lady unveiled the decorations at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on Monday, while welcoming children of military families to the residence.

Trump, who personally selected the decor, says she wanted to make the White House feel like home over the holidays.

The decorations continue a tradition that dates back decades. This year, each room has its own unique look, including special settings, elaborate centerpieces, and a giant White House made out of gingerbread. It took 36 pastry chefs to create the tasty model, and it weighs more than 300 pounds.

And Mrs. Trump didn't have to do all the decorating by herself. More than 150 volunteers from around the country spent more than 1,600 hours decorating the White House. They used about 12,000 ornaments, more than 1,000 feet of garland, and 53 Christmas trees to create this year's festive look.

The Trump Family also unveiled its official White House Christmas card Monday, as part of a tradition that dates back to 1953.

The White House says 25,000 visitors are expected to take special Christmas tours of the building during the holidays.
