Inauguration Day Forecast: Slight chance for snow showers early Monday
WASHINGTON - As the Washington, D.C. region prepares for the influx of people arriving for Inauguration Day and the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend, wet weather could complicate plans. The forecast indicates potential rain showers that may impact outdoor events and ceremonies on Saturday and Sunday, with a slight chance of snow showers early Monday morning.
Here’s the forecast:
Friday DC Weather Forecast
Temperatures will slowly cool back down to the mid-30s as we head into the overnight hours with clouds slowly filtering in. Winds will be on the calmer side, mostly out of the south.
Saturday DC Weather Forecast
What we know:
A cool and dry start gives way to our next weather maker moving in by the afternoon hours. Rain is expected to start around the afternoon with highs reaching the mid to upper 40s. Winds will be again mostly out of the southwest at around 8-12 mph. Rainfall totals will be around a tenth and a quarter of an inch.
The rain tapers off by midnight with cloud cover sticking around during the overnight hours. Lows will be in the mid-30s with winds shifting to a northerly breeze.
Sunday DC Weather Forecast
Big picture view:
Another chance of wet weather makes its way into the area, especially by the afternoon hours. Temperatures will hover around the low 40s and upper 30s with winds still out of the north, reinforcing some of that cooler air.
This could make the precipitation type tricky as we could start to see some snow mixing in with the rain. Models have been flipping back and forth about whether the second weekend system will have enough cold air at the surface to allow for snow, but they are in agreement that a second system will form and bring in some form of precipitation. We're keeping an eye closely as to how this second system evolves in the coming days.
Lingering snow showers continue to stick around as the system slowly drifts off to the northeast, leaving behind it chilly air once again. Lows are expected to remain in the mid to upper 20s.
Inauguration Day Weather Forecast
By the numbers:
A slight chance for snow showers is still possible with this exiting system. Temperatures at the Presidential Inauguration around noon will be in the upper 20s with winds again out of the northwest at about 6-12 mph. Wind chill values will hover around the upper 10s and low 20s. Be sure to stay bundled up if you are attending any outdoor events or the swearing in ceremony as frost bite can set in after 30 minutes of exposure.
