Icy conditions on roadways, sidewalks in DC region as cleanup continues

Cleanup efforts are in full swing across the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia regions following the season's first significant winter storm. Officials continue to emphasize that residents should avoid driving unless absolutely necessary on Tuesday, due to hazardous conditions.

Drivers and pedestrians are warned to watch out for icy roadways, sidewalks, and black ice. Despite the snow coming to an end late Monday night, the potential for refreezing remains high. Gusty winds, reaching up to 34 mph, will blow snow into windshields and faces, further complicating travel.

It's unclear at this time if a tractor-trailer crash on I-370 westbound at MD-355 in Montgomery County was due to icy conditions. The crash blocked two lanes and the exit ramp. Emergency response teams are on the scene. Authorities expect an extended closure as they work to clear the crash.

School closures, delays for DC, Maryland, Virginia for Tuesday, January 7

Maryland State Police have reported receiving 1,137 calls for service, including 261 crashes and 309 unattended vehicles. Authorities urge drivers to remove snow and ice from their vehicles before traveling.

Looking ahead, there is a threat of another winter storm from Saturday into Sunday, which could potentially disrupt travel. Tuesday's high temperatures will hover near 31 degrees, but wind chills will make it feel much colder.
