How many inches of snow will the DMV see Monday? Prepare for up to 12 inches
WASHINGTON - A potentially historic winter storm is headed toward the mid-Atlantic, and snowfall totals are expected to reach up to 12 inches for some areas of the DMV.
LATEST FORECAST: DC snow forecast: Heavy snowfall moving across the DMV
FOX 5 snowfall forecast for DC, Virginia and Maryland through Monday, Jan. 6, 2025.
How much snow is expected?
Snowfall rates between one and three inches per hour are possible through mid-morning. There will be a break from late morning through early afternoon with intermittent light snow, sleet, or freezing drizzle. A second round of snow is expected late this afternoon and evening before the precipitation ends tonight.
Motorists are advised to use extreme caution if travel is necessary. It is recommended to keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. For the latest road conditions, call 511.
Residents are urged to stay informed and consider delaying all travel until conditions improve.
Winter storm warning issued for DMV
A winter storm warning has been issued for D.C., central Maryland, and Northern Virginia by the National Weather Service. The warning will remain in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday evening to 1 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to officials.
What to expect with travel
As the snowfall arrives Sunday night into Monday, travel will certainly be impacted. Any untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses will become slick and dangerous for travel.
FOX 5'S Gwen Tolbart warns, if you do not have to venture out, then plan to just stay inside once the snow arrives.
Some areas could see a wintry mix, including sleet, ice or freezing rain. Pedestrians will also have to walk with caution.
If you have plans to catch a flight, there is a very good chance of flight cancelations or delays due to the inclement weather. Call ahead and plan accordingly.
The models are still showing significant winter weather. Snow bursts, any shift in the storm's track, and the amount of mix in any given area will affect snow totals.
