The incident happened at Saint Elizabeths Hospital around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 1100 block of Alabama Avenue and involved two males.

Hospital officials released the following statement:

"Saint Elizabeths Hospital is committed to a safe, therapeutic environment for individuals with serious mental illness who need inpatient treatment to recover. Tragically, early reports indicate that a patient was killed this morning by another patient. Both patients were recent transfers from the DC Jail for court-ordered psychiatric evaluations. Per our protocol, Saint Elizabeths will conduct an internal investigation to determine whether all safety procedures were followed. We are providing emotional support to patients and staff."
