WASHINGTON - Three U.S. Postal Service workers are facing stiff prison sentences after they were convicted last week.
Deenvaughn Rowe, Alicia Norman and Kendra Brantley thought they had pulled one over on the U.S. Postal Service. For months, they had moved hundreds of pounds of marijuana through a Northwest D.C. post office without getting caught. That was until investigators installed some sneaky cameras in their trucks.
In one video, Brantley, who is in the back of her postal truck, is about to hand off boxes of marijuana to a man on the street.
"Same person from yesterday it looks like. Black beanie, black jacket with a green vest over it - passed off first box," said one of the investigators in the video.
Brantley would hand over five more boxes before meeting the man in front of her truck where he hands over the cash. This happened on May 19, 2016 - a couple of months after detectives had caught onto the scheme.
As early as March 17, investigators had installed tiny cameras in the truck driven by Brantley. In another video, the payoff comes in a paper bag. The camera captures her counting the cash.
On April 11, investigators were onto Norman and had installed tiny cameras in her truck as well. Video shows her handing off several boxes of marijuana to a man in a Range Rover. The camera in the front of the truck captures the payoff and then the money count.
These videos shown to the jury show the postal workers were trailed and photographed more than once with investigators capturing Brantley several times in the act of the exchange - and at least three times counting cash.
We never did see who prosecutors called the mastermind of the scheme leave the courthouse. Rowe has been locked up in jail since his arrest and has not gotten out since.
Prosecutors showed a picture of Rowe to the jury drinking expensive champagne at a Cayman Islands yacht club.
Prosecutors said Rowe, who was working as a supervisor at the Lamond-Riggs Postal Service station in Northwest D.C., would flag the boxes of marijuana before they could be detected by the postal inspector and he made sure they got into the hands of Brantley and Norman.
FOX 5 was there last August as both Norman and Brantley left the courthouse after they were indicted. Neither of them wanted to be photographed.
To prove their point that Rowe was living way above his means, prosecutors showed the jury photographs of titles to expensive cars as well as cash found in the pocket of a suit jacket in his home.
All three defendants were convicted last week with Rowe facing as much as 40 years in prison while Brantley and Norman facing at least five years or more.
Prosecutors declined to comment after the convictions.
All three will be sentenced in September and October.
