LAUREL, Md. - A weekend of drenching rain has left behind flooded roadways and downed trees across the area.
In Laurel, a swollen Little Patuxent River rose and flooded its banks early Monday washing away part of Route 198 (Fort Meade Road) at Bald Eagle Drive. FOX 5's Melanie Alnwick was at the scene as chunks of asphalt fell from the broken roadway into the muddy river. Tree branches and other debris that washed down stream from the Ellicott City area created a dam that prevented even more water from rushing down the river.
Police have closed Route 198 at this time. Officials say flooding concerns can remain present as many as two days after a heavy rain stops.
In other areas across the region a tree slammed into a house on the 3400 block of Texas Avenue in Southeast D.C.
Parts of Route 50 in Prince George's County was underwater in Cheverly closing the road in both directions. In Beltsville, seven were pulled from their vehicles after swift flood waters struck.
On Monday all Stafford County Public School in Virginia were closed due to impassable road related to flooding.
