Heavy storms bring rain, strong winds and power outages to DC region

WASHINGTON - Heavy thunderstorm clusters brought rain, strong winds and power outages to the D.C. region Sunday night causing thousands to wake up in the dark Monday morning.

The strong storms moved into the area during the evening hours Sunday and continued overnight. The storms downed trees and power lines in some parts of the area causing road closures and outages. Flooding concerns were also an issues across roadways in low-lying areas. FOX 5's Mike Thomas says several Tornado Warnings were triggered in portions of Maryland and Virginia overnight. Spotsylvania County Public Schools closed Monday morning due to widespread power outages.

Mike says most of the storms moved out of the region by the morning hours Monday. Clearing skies and mild temperatures can be expected as the day continues, he said. While the storms are gone, strong winds could still be an issue with 40 mph gusts possible. A Wind Advisory will stay in place until later this evening.

Calm weather conditions are expected for most of the week, Mike says, with only a spotted shower on Wednesday. We're also keeping a close watch on a weather system that could bring more heavy storms to the area by late Friday.
