Fast and furious rains triggered major flooding at the Cleveland Park Metro station on Friday.

Video that was taken at about 6:45 p.m. shows water rushing down the stairs and escalators as metro riders try to exit the station.

The station has a history of flooding during heavy rains and residents told FOX 5 they hope it's an issue that can be resolved soon.

"When it floods it's really quite spectacular when it happens. The water comes down the escalators and we kind of worry about it frying the big escalators," Cleveland Park resident Sam Sankar said.

Metro officials said riders do not have to worry about electric shock from the escalators as the wires are coated and weather proofed.

A plan to install more drainage for flood-prone metro stations is set to begin in the summer of 2018.
