BIBB COUNTY, Ga. - Authorities in Bibb County said they are investigating a deadly deputy-involved shooting which happened Friday afternoon.
WGXA in Macon reports the shooting happened near the intersection of Houston Avenue and Colquitt Street. Bibb County Sheriff David Davis tells the news station a deputy responding to a report of a shoplifting got into an altercation with a man matching the description of the suspect. Agent J.T. Rickertson with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the deputy deployed his stun gun, but the man pulled the prongs out.
The GBI said the deputy then tried to use his pepper spray, but the man was able to pull it away and used it on the deputy. Rickertson said the deputy then used his side arm, firing it at least once, shooting and killing the man.
WGXA reports neighbors helped the deputy flush the pepper spray from his eyes until emergency officials arrived.
It is unclear whether the man was armed. His identity has not yet been released
Sheriff Davis did not release the name of the deputy, but said he has been in law enforcement for several years. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment. His condition was not immediately known.
