A couple hit by a car in Gaithersburg Wednesday was out for their daily walk when they were struck.

Montgomery County police said Phillip Kwang Bon Uh, 78, died at the scene.

His wife survived the crash, but the couple’s son said both of Grace Uh’s knees were broken.

"She’s stable," said Michael Uh. "She just finished surgery and she’s alert. From what I’m hearing, it’s going to be a pretty long road to recovery."

Michael said his parents exercised together every day and loved both walking and hiking in Montgomery County.

Police said the couple was crossing Muddy Branch Road at King James Way right around 2 p.m. when they were hit.

Investigators said the driver who hit them stayed on scene. Police haven’t disclosed if the couple was in the crosswalk at the time or if the driver could be facing charges.

Michael said his parents came to this country in the 1980s from South Korea, his dad leaving behind extended family and an engineering job to give his two kids a better life. He says his dad loved living in Maryland.

"He was extremely proud of the decision that he made to immigrate here, and I believe that he would’ve had no regrets," Michael said.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating this matter. Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact CRU detectives at 240-773-6620.
