UPPER MARLBORO, Md. - A family spokesperson said Sunday that no suspects have been identified in the killing of Ashanti Billie, the 19-year-old from Prince George's County who was found dead in North Carolina.
The FBI continues to investigate what happened to Billie. She went missing from Norfolk, Virginia on Monday September 18 and her body was discovered Friday, eleven days later, behind a church in Charlotte.
On Sunday night, Billie's former classmates from Wise High School in Upper Marlboro gathered to remember her in the school parking lot.
"Billie was outstanding," said Taneis Hunter, her close friend "Billie set the bar for everyone."
She was described as outgoing, kind and even inspirational, a member of the dance team and ROTC.
"It's not fair," said former classmate Selvin Marquina, in tears. "She was supposed to go to school, open a restaurant, have kids. Things like this aren't supposed to happen."
After high school, Billie moved to Norfolk to go to culinary school. She had recently started working as an assistant manager at a Blimpie sandwich shop on a military base in Norfolk. She was last seen entering Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek before 5 a.m. on Sept. 18.
Just 30 minutes after she drove onto the base, surveillance cameras captured Billie's cream colored Mini Cooper leaving the base. It's unknown who was driving the car.
The FBI held a press conference on the case a week after Billie went missing, asking for the public's help.
Investigators said Billie's cell phone was found in a dumpster in the area of Azalea Gardens Road and Tallyho Terrace in Norfolk, a few miles away from the base, and her car was abandoned in the Ocean View area of Norfolk, also several miles from the base.
Family members and volunteers searched the area in Norfolk where Billie's cell phone was found and discovered clothing, hair braids and a sock, but the FBI would not say if that evidence is linked to Billie.
On Friday morning, a landscaper at the East Stonewall AME Zion Church in Charlotte, North Carolina found Billie's body behind the church.
On Saturday, Billie's parents addressed the media.
"She's home, she's home with God," said Tony Billie, her father.
The parents gave no indication of any suspects or motives in the crime, but had a message for the killer(s).
"The person or persons that decided they wanted to take our baby away from us and everyone that loves her, you're a coward," said Brandy Billie, her mother. "You don't deserve to breathe the air that she breathes."
At the vigil Sunday, friends said Billie had a boyfriend, but he's been in basic training in South Carolina; information confirmed by the Billie family spokesperson.
Friends said they have no idea who would do this or why, especially to someone with such a bright future.
"She will always be alive in my heart," said Marquina. "And when I look at the sky at night, I'll see a star and I know it's her."
