LARGO, Md. - A recent Largo High School graduate was killed and another man was injured after a double shooting overnight in Prince George's County.
The shootings happened at around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Prince Place and Swiss Gap in Largo.
Police say 18-year-old Allyssa Banks was shot outside of a car parked along Prince Place. Police arrived at the scene and found Banks and another man suffering from gunshot wounds. Banks was transported to a local hospital where she later died. The male victim was also transported to the hospital and is expected to survive.
Banks graduated from Largo High School this past May, according to Prince George's County Public Schools spokesperson Raven Hill. The principal of Largo High School confirmed Banks was president of the school's Student Government Association during the previous school year.
Family and friends described Banks as quiet, but also sweet and kind.
"I think she ran for SGA president to let people know that you don't have to be very loud and outgoing to take control and help out," said Dyonna Nelson, a friend of Banks. "She just wanted to be a big help."
Nelson added, "Whoever did it, they don't know how much of a great person she was to have around and they don't know how she affected many people's lives in Largo and her family and just anywhere she went."
Police are still investigating the motive for the shooting. They say Banks and the male victim knew each other, but it is unclear what their relationship was. The shooting took place across the street from where Banks lived with her mother.
After the shooting, police were seen searching the car for evidence before it was towed away. We are told there was also a dog inside of the vehicle at the time of the shooting. The animal was not harmed and was taken from the scene by animal control.
No suspects have been identified at this time.
