Force of storm damages trees near Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and Tidal Basin

Several trees along the National Mall were damaged during Thursday storms that brought heavy rain and power outages to the D.C. region.

The National Park Service said the force of the storm moved the Washington Monument mulberry tree off of its temporary support and caused additional damage to its limbs. The tree fell earlier this month due to water saturation in the ground. The tree is significant because it pre-dates the monument.

The National Park Service said that some trees around the Tidal Basin, Hains Point and the Lincoln Memorial were also damaged.
