Flu death reported in Frederick, Maryland, officials say

As the nation undergoes a surge of flu activity, the latest adult flu death was confirmed in Frederick, Maryland.

Frederick Memorial Hospital confirmed to FOX 5 an adult flu death was reported at its facility. The hospital has not released the circumstances surrounding the death, including if any complications contributed to the death.

But the sharp rise in flu deaths across the nation has led health officials to send out another round of warnings.

Most hospitalized patients have been 65 or older, and according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, so far 37 children have died of complications from the flu.

In just the past three weeks, there have been 1,504 deaths related to influenza across the US. Of those.

The CDC reports that in Maryland, over 100 people have died from either the flu or pneumonia during that time.

Currently, the U.S. is on track to hit the same levels as 2015, which saw 5,263 deaths.

Doctors are urging patients dealing with flu symptoms to seek help immediately, as early treatment could help against sepsis, pneumonia and dehydration complications.

Some warning signs to look out for include shortness of breath, high fever, confusion, diarrhea, abdominal pain or other severe pain.
