Fire in Shenandoah National Park tops 5,600 acres

LURAY, Va. (AP) -- A fire in Shenandoah National Park has now scorched more than 5,600 acres and closed a portion of the Appalachian Trail.

Crews with the Virginia Department of Forestry worked Wednesday to contain the wildfire. There have been no reports of property damage or injuries.

Forestry officials say the wildfire has steadily grown since it was first reported over the weekend. The fire is being fed by tinder dry pine, oak and mountain laurel.

The fire has caused the closure of the Georgia-to-Maine Appalachian Trail from Powell Gap to Doyles River Overlook.

Forestry officials say the cause of the fire is not known.
