Find out what’s inside the time capsule replacing the one underneath Richmond’s Robert E Lee monument
RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia Governor Ralph Northam on Tuesday announced which items will be stored inside the time capsule that will replace the one located underneath Richmond’s contentious Robert E. Lee monument once it comes down.

The monument is slated to be removed on Wednesday, following over a year of wrangling in the courts.

Historians believe a time capsule containing some 60 Confederate artifacts was placed under the monument when it was erected in 1887.

"This monument and its time capsule reflected Virginia in 1890—and it’s time to remove both, so that our public spaces better reflect who we are as a people in 2021," Northam said.
