Authorities have charged the father of the student who they say brought a loaded firearm into a Spotsylvania County middle school in May. FOX 5's Tisha Lewis spoke to a concerned parent and a criminal defense attorney about the incident.

Authorities have charged the father of the student who they say brought a loaded firearm into a Spotsylvania County middle school in May.

Josette Rodriquez, 37, from Pennsylvania, was charged with recklessly leaving a loaded, unsecured firearm to endanger the life or limb of a child under 14. He has a June 20 court date, deputies say.

The incident happened on May 19, the last day of school at Chancellor Middle. The Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office said a School Resource Officer was notified by administrators of a student who may be in possession of a gun.

According to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office, the loaded .45 caliber handgun was located in the student’s backpack. No injuries were reported during the incident.

The Sheriff's Office says at no time was the gun shown in a way to threaten students, faculty, or staff or threaten the safety of the school. The student was taken into custody on the day of the incident.
